NLMK Begins Commercial Production of Laminated Film-Coated Steel
NLMK now offers premium laminated steel with a Food Safe* coating. The coating is based on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film and goes into interior finishes in environments with heightened requirements for wear resistance under regular mechanical impacts and chemical exposure.
The film-coated steel complies with GOST 34180-2017 and is certified for food contact. This solution broadens the material’s use in facilities with the stringent sanitary requirements: from production and warehouse areas in the agricultural and food industries to interior finishes of vans that carry food products.
Key coating parameters:
· Strip thickness — 0.4–1.2 mm
· Strip width — 900–1400 mm
· Film thickness — 80–150 µm
The key advantages of steel with film lamination are the combination of coating elasticity, which is retained at sub-zero temperatures, and exceptional chemical and mechanical resistance, at 10-times higher than standard polyester coatings.
| | Comparison with standard polyester |
| Scratch resistance (force required to penetrate through the coating) | 10x higher |
| Bend strength, incl. at low temperatures | polyester — 1.5–2.0T down to +15°C PVC film — 0T down to –20°C |
| Reverse impact strength, incl. at low temperatures | polyester — 10 J down to +15°C PVC film — 20 J down to –20°C |
| Resistance to mineral acids and alkalis** | 10x higher |
The laminated film-coated steel has been tested by the Federal Centre for State Sanitary and Epidemiological Supervision and holds a certificate of compliance with the “Requirements for materials and products made of polymer and other materials intended for contact with food products and media.”
Successful use case: Laminated rolled steel
Customer request: “A manufacturer of sandwich panels and refrigeration equipment required film-coated steel with food-grade approval and flexible shipment terms.”
Result: Taking the customer’s technical requirements into account, NLMK mastered the production technology for coated steel suitable for industries where only so-called “food-grade” stainless steels could previously be used. In addition, the Company upgraded its warehouse storage system to meet the customer’s needs, enabling small-lot deliveries starting from 5 tonnes.
