NLMK Masters Production of High-strength Chequered Hot-rolled Steel

NLMK Group has added a new product for low-temperature operation — grade 09G2S hot-rolled chequered steel with a teardrop pattern, with a guaranteed yield strength of at least 345 MPa. The product is manufactured in accordance with GOST 8568-77 with additional steel properties above the standard. This enables use in extreme climatic conditions, at temperatures of –60°C and below.

Thanks to its anti-slip properties, 09G2S chequered steel is in demand for the manufacture of flooring, walking surfaces, stairways, and platforms at high-load facilities, including:

· urban and industrial infrastructure (street surfaces, wet areas, technical passages, service zones, bridge walkways),

· various modes of transport.

The embossed lentil-shaped pattern is applied using special rolls. The chequering provides a high coefficient of friction, creating an anti-slip effect, and also increases wear resistance and resistance to mechanical loads.

Compared to St3sp grade steel, the new product features higher physical and mechanical properties, enabling reliable performance in cold climate zones.* In addition, chequered steel helps increase the stiffness of structures.

Key characteristics:

· Yield strength — not less than 345 MPa,

· Ultimate tensile strength — not less than 490 MPa,

· Impact toughness KCU — not less than 34 J/cm² (at –60°C) and not less than 29 J/cm² (at +20°C after mechanical aging),

· Steel thickness — 4–12 mm,

· Supplied in coils and sheets.

Over the past 6 months, the Company has delivered more than 300 tonnes of the new product — developed at a customer’s request — for flooring at facilities with high usage intensity in harsh climatic conditions. NLMK will continue to develop its product range in line with current customer needs.

* Testing can be performed to determine impact toughness KCU at –60°C and KCU at +20°C after mechanical aging.
