NLMK’s crushed blast furnace slag: safe and efficient
Active road construction works call for materials that are both cost-effective and environmentally safe. Construction of roads within and outside of population clusters creates a surge in demand for products that are free from harmful substances. Blast furnace crushed slag fully meets the above requirements and features multiple strengths.
NLMK’s crushed slag is a strong, light and eco-friendly construction material obtained as a result of processing blast furnace slag formed during cast iron production.
This product has high performance characteristics: activity, strength, and frost resistance. Crushed slag is also distinguished by advanced adhesion to binding materials, its resistance to aggressive environments and high water resistance.
Due to its low bulk density, blast furnace crushed slag is lighter than its natural equivalent, which makes it much easier to compact leading to labour cost reduction. Moreover, activity of the material ensures a thinner design layer, while optimal grain composition provides better particle distribution and requires less mechanical effort to achieve the design density.
This product is manufactured by NLMK in a number of fractions (from 0-5 to 120 mm) in strict compliance with state standards: GOST 3344-83, GOST 58770-2019, GOST 32826-2014.

Key applications
· Road construction: used for various road layers, mainly for crushed stone road base.
· Construction: used as an aggregate to produce ready-mixed concrete and slag blocks, and to build foundations.
· Heat insulation materials: production of mineral wool (insulation).
· Cement production: granulated blast furnace slags are added to cement mixtures.
Main aspects of blast furnace crushed slag eco-friendliness
· Manufacturing process: steelmaking by-product processing instead of natural resources extraction.
· Integrated use of raw materials: processing steelmaking slag from the dumps into blast furnace crushed slag for its further use reduces the environmental impact and space required to store it.
· Safety: BF crushed slag belongs to class I of construction materials (allowed for any types of construction works) and has a lower radiation background compared to natural crushed stone (the content of radionuclides does not exceed 370 Bq/kg, which is confirmed by Rospotrebnadzor (the Russian consumer safety watchdog) protocols*).
