The main advantage of 09G2S is a combination of high mechanical strength and excellent weldability, without a tendency toward temper embrittlement. Thanks to its low carbon content (around 0.09%) and manganese alloying (up to 1.7%), 09G2S steel can withstand heavy loads at temperatures as low as -70°C.

Q: What are the differences between 09G2S steel and its European equivalent, S355J2?


A: The primary difference is in their chemical composition. 09G2S contains a higher silicon (Si) content (up to 0.8%), which enhances metal de-oxidation and helps maintain stable properties when welding thick plates. Additionally, according to GOST 19281, 09G2S is specifically designed for more extreme cold temperatures, tolerating conditions down to -70°C, whereas S355J2 is only rated for temperatures as low as -20°C.



Q: What does "category" mean in the 09G2S steel marking, and how do I choose the right one?


A: The "category" (such as 6, 9, 12, or 15) indicates the impact bending testing conditions.


  • For applications at around -40°C, choose categories 9 or 12.
  • For extreme environments, like -60°C and below, choose categories 14 or 15.


Choosing the wrong category is a common mistake that can lead to unnecessary costs or, worse, brittle failure of the structure.



Q: Is it necessary to heat treat 09G2S steel after welding?


A: In most cases, no. Thanks to its low carbon content, 09G2S steel isn’t prone to hardening. However, for pressure vessels or when working with sheet thicknesses over 30-40 mm, high-temperature tempering can be recommended to relieve internal stresses caused by welding.



Q: How does 09G2S perform in aggressive environments like seawater or salt fog?


A: While the presence of copper and chromium (within microalloying limits) offers slightly better corrosion resistance than St3, 09G2S is not inherently corrosion-resistant. In Arctic coastal zones, the application of paint and lacquer coating or hot-dip galvanizing is mandatory to ensure protection.
